Replacing Missing Teeth with Dentures

If you have missing teeth because of tooth decay, gum disease or an injury, dentures offer a permanent replacement for many of our patients at GranDental Center in Lehigh Acres. Depending upon how many missing teeth you have and your specific needs, dentures may be either partial or complete (full). While they offer patients many advantages, they often require more of an adjustment period than dental implants because they may not feel as natural or as comfortable to many patients at first. Some patients complain that they feel bulky or that they feel loose, and they often impact speech and the patient’s ability to chew. However, they should begin to feel more natural over time.

Conventional vs. Immediate Full Dentures

If you require full dentures, you usually have two available options: conventional or immediate. If you opt for conventional, we’ll remove all of your teeth and you’ll be without them during the healing process. If you opt for immediate full dentures, we’ll have dentures immediately fitted for your mouth so you’re never without teeth. However, additional follow-up care and denture adjustments will usually be necessary because your dentures will shift around while your mouth and jawbone are healing.

The Many Advantages Afforded by Dentures

While we previously mentioned a few of the adjustment period drawbacks to dentures, they actually offer our patients many advantages, including:

  • Aesthetics – Today’s dentures are made to more closely resemble your natural teeth. When you have missing teeth, it can also cause your face to sag and make you appear older. Dentures do more than just improve your smile’s appearance!
  • Restored Function – Dentures are designed to function like your natural teeth, giving you the ability to speak, bite and chew properly again. You also shouldn’t have to miss out on any of your favorite foods!
  • Improved Speech – People with missing teeth often have great difficulty properly enunciating. Dentures make improved speech possible.
  • Confidence – People with missing teeth often don’t feel confident. Wearing dentures can help you improve your self-esteem and restore your personal confidence for others to see.
